Question:
Do you still consider Filipino products to be inferior to that of the US?

During my childhood days, we simply like things mostly coming from the US from food to appliances to almost everything money can buy. Because of its quality and texture I guess. But I guess times change, I myself will look for Filipino products mostly made in the Philippines whether from a mere t-shirt to food products. Although some food items in the US are still superior to that of the Philippines I now appreciate the Filipino products more than ever. Maybe because of technology we now have compared to 30 years ago. That is why I post a question before that we should some how advertise our Filipino products especially food items to almost every Embassy we have around the world, not only to boost the Filipino economy but to find jobs for our own kababayan right there in the Philippines. Some says baduy daw iyon gagawin nating palengke ang mga embahada natin. Do you agree on this concept? Of course not. Ano ba tayo walang isip? We do not have to be that low to do such a thing to our embassy abroad. Sa akin lang what more advertisement do we need when we have our own consolate to parade the Philippines not only as a nation of people but to give foreigners idea of what we have produce. What do you think?

I agree with shintake about the T-shirts from Penshoppe, Bench, etc. They have high quality, that is why my husband buys them when we are in the Philippines. Where I am now, we do have Filipino Festivals sponsored by the consulate and there we get to see, eat and buy Pinoy products. But you see, the visitors of these Festivals are also Pinoys and not much foreigners. I only buy what I can eat since the rest of my family do not appreciate most Pinoy foods since they grew up here and were exposed more to __________ cuisine. The prices of these Pinoy commodities are expensive !!!

Mr. deliverance, where I am now, there are strict rules governing the use of buildings. An edifice or a building meant to be used as an embassy or bank or as an apartment cannot be used as anything else except for what it was built for. To make use of the embassy or consulate as a mini-talipapa or supermarket is a breach of contract. In the Philippine embassy here, there is a big bulletin board where one can find advertisements for various Philippine products, but mostly food. And these Pinoys in the embassy are not idle, in fact, they are very busy. (I think this is the second time you have posted this question.)

Yes, sadly. Quality is way behind from being a standard and the country is not a highly-industrialized nation. Most everything is imported.

Only a very few penetrate the international market and catch the attention of moneyed nations.

Another sad thing is that the global market will most likely not recognize Philippine brands because the locals themselves don't and won't patronize these local products. The ghosts of past colonial masters are still in the air. The national government must make it easy for Filipino businesses accross all products and services especially in research and development.

Excuse me people.

If you take a closer look at the products being produced in the Philippines either home-brand or made for foreign brands, they are at par with other countries. Many foreign apparel are produced here. It's just that, they don't put a "made in the philippines" label because of such mentality that Philippine made products are inferior. I bet that most of the chips that you use on your cell phones and other gadgets are manufactured here.

I've been to NZ and Singapore (though not US) and the apparel really sucks! Our local brands such Penshoppe, Bench, Folded&Hung, etc are way much better in style and in comfort. I had a friend from US though that sent me a tee, and I laughed because the quality is like from China.

Kudos to delive_rance for posting this question. Maybe, most people now don't know of these things.

Quality control is not what it should be in the Philippines. No pride in workmanship if it is being manufactured for a company that is paying its employees substandard wages with substandard working conditions. So, why should the workers try to produce high quality products? Just like someone said, " good enough".

The same for "customer service". No supervision to see that customers are being handled and treated with efficiency.

This goes for government run services as well. We are at their mercy when it comes to speed, efficiency and courtesy. Not to mention the cost of doing business with the government. They "nickle and dime" you to death. (charge for everything)

Have you ever observed, if you're selling a made in the Philippines item to a Filipino, most would inspect the product very thoroughly (shaking it, stretching it, turning it inside out) before they buy it but when you're selling them an identical item but made in the US, they won't scrutinize the product much.

Filipino products are inferior and rarely would you find that passes the standard of quality if being sold to other countries.

The fact that there's no government regulatory that controls and abide to its standards to compete with other foreign import/export products makes it harder for some Filipinos to be swayed to patronized products made by their own countrymen.

Additionally silly:

Well, I guess if Rizal was still alive he would probably summon all the gay fashion designers to beat the house of Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy.

This additional answer has been inspired by Asker’s previous question which I taught was really fascinating.

Philippine products can be excellent. The problem is the tendency of business here to cut-corners and try to do things as cheaply as possible. This leads to inferior products.

If the Philippines wishes to thrive in world markets, people need to stop thinking "it's good enough". "Good enough" rarely is.

Now hold on there pardner! Some product that made in the Philippines are excellent. Like clothing, some T-shirt or pants that I bought in the mall are much superior than those made in Honduras, Mexico or any asian country. I was surprise that sometimes they are hard to find.

Do either the USA or Philippines produce or export much of anything? other than food products? The usa exports mostly wheat, corn, etc.. while philippines exports mostly pineapples, coconuts, etc.. The manufactured products such as appliances, clothing, etc.. found in retail stores of both countries mostly comes from other places, such as China.

sometimes depends on who made it

some products actually are of imported materials but are made or assembled here because of cheap labor......when they are sent back they will be branded differently
